The Imperial Russian Ballet choreographer Marius Petipa, commissioned Tchaikovsky to compose the music in 1891. The adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s (1776-1882) fantasy story “ The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” premiered in St Petersburg the following year.
