Prior to the introduction of railways, communities around the UK had their own local time (e.g. Bristol was 10 minutes behind Greenwich Mean Time.) With the structured form of transport, Railway Clearing House decreed in 1847 that GMT time be the standard. The majority of cities had complied by 1855.
