Although faded in time, originally the roses were more pink in shade. Van Gogh regarded all blossoming flowers as being filled with life, celebrating birth and renewal. He wrote to his brother around the time of this painting, how he had "worked as in a frenzy. Great bunches of flowers, violet irises, big bouquets of roses...".
