Initially, movie theatres were trying to appeal to a highbrow clientele, and so popcorn was not a welcome snack. However, when films added sound, the movie theatre industry boomed, reaching 90 million per week in 1930. At 5 to 10 cents a bag, the affordable popcorn became synonymous to the snack to have when going to the movies.
