The town was founded around 250 BC by the Parisii - a sub tribe of the Celtic Senones. 987 AD the city became the capital of France. Initially with the Latin name of Parisius, later called Paris, the city measures 40.7 square miles (105.4 km2) with a population of over 2 million people.
